North America’s Largest Commuter Film Festival Annual Call for 60-Second Submissions is Now Open.
TORONTO ON, May 1, 2015 – Celebrated Canadian filmmaker, Patricia Rozema will guest judge the 9th annual Toronto Urban Film Festival (TUFF). TUFF is returning to subway screens across Toronto and digital screens in malls across Canada from September 12 to 20, 2015.
TUFF’s Call for Submissions is now open to Canadian and international filmmakers. TUFF accepts all genre of silent, 60-second film, video and animation of interest to an urban audience. Submissions are FREE until May 31st. A submission fee of $20.00 is applied as of June 1st. FINAL submission deadline is June 30, 2015. www.torontourbanfilmfestival.com
Patricia Rozema is an internationally recognized screen-writer, filmmaker and director. Rozema’s stunning debut film, I’ve Heard the Mermaids Singing (1987) won the coveted Prix de la Jeunesse, Cannes Film Festival and opened the Toronto International Film Festival. Her accomplishments include: the PEN Screenwriter’s award winning, Grey Gardens (2009), Kit Kittredge: An American Girl (2008), Mansfield Park (1999), When Night is Falling (1995), White Room (1990) and the Emmy Award winning and Grammy nominated, Six Gestures, part of the series Yo-Yo Ma: Inspired by Bach. Rozema participated in The Beckett Film Project directing, Happy Days (2001), and among her TV credits are Tell Me You Love Me (2007) and In Treatment (2008). Patricia Rozema returns to the big screen this fall with Into the Forest starring Ellen Page.
“Limitations trigger creativity,” said Patricia Rozema “But imagine these: your movie can only be 60 seconds and your audience is in transit, so mostly they couldn’t care less. And you’re not selling something they might covet. That’s what the TUFF filmmakers are up against. As this year’s guest judge, I can’t wait to see what they come up with.”
TUFF screens at 5-minute intervals on over 290 platform screens across Toronto’s subway system, offering engaging independent films to an audience of over one million daily commuters for the price of a token.
TUFF Local Stories features Canadian filmmakers that explore, critique, or show love for their own hometowns on PATTISON Onestop’s network of shopping mall screens. This special programme will appear on screens in 40 malls across Canada, capturing the attention of more than 5 million mall visitors a week.
Continuing TUFF traditions for 2015: a special TUFF Film Zone, featuring uninterrupted play of festival films on all PATTISON Onestop subway screens at St Andrew station in Toronto’s downtown core during the festival; TUFF Above Ground on PATTISON’s giant video screen at Yonge and Edward (Toronto); Too TUFF for the TTC, the online-only program of great films not appropriate for screening in a public transit setting.

TUFF is North America’s largest commuter film festival. Selected films are eligible for cash prizes and awards, including a $3,000 top prize and a $2,500 prize from the City of Toronto for emerging Greater Toronto Area filmmakers. Selections are made by our programming team, and top prizes are awarded by the 2015 Guest Judge, Patricia Rozema. Past guest judges have included: Guy Maddin, Bruce McDonald, Jennifer Baichwal, Atom Egoyan, and Deepa Mehta.
